Venting Both Codes Agree On — Trap-Seal Protection, Sizing, Grades and Connections, Terminals, Vent Stacks, Wet Venting, Circuit Venting, Combination Waste-and-Vent, Island Venting (UPC ch. 9 / IPC ch. 9)
A drainage system only flows by gravity if air can get in behind the water and out ahead of it. Both chapters exist for one number: no trap seal may see a pressure differential of more than 1 inch of water column (UPC 901.3; IPC 901.2). Everything else — how big a vent is, where it connects, where it ends, and the shortcut systems (wet, circuit, combination, island) — is a way of holding that number. The two codes agree on the mechanics and disagree on a handful of numbers (the roof-terminal height, the frost-closure size, the tall-stack triggers, the trap-arm table); those are collected in §1

1. What must be vented, and with what
- Every fixture trap is protected against siphonage and back-pressure by a vent (UPC 901.2; IPC 901.2.1). The vent system "admits or emits air" so the seal holds (IPC 901.2).
- Vent piping uses the same materials as drainage piping (UPC 903.1 → 701.2; IPC 902.1 → 702). Galvanized steel is above-ground only — the UPC keeps it 6 in above ground (903.1(1)); the IPC lists it for above-ground use only (Tables 702.1/702.2).
- Copper tube for drainage or venting is not lighter than type DWV (UPC 903.2; IPC Table 702.1 lists Types K, L, M and DWV).
- Vent piping is used only for venting — never as a soil or waste pipe, except in the wet-vent, common-vent, combination and circuit-vent arrangements the codes spell out (UPC 310.4; IPC 901.4).
- Several stack vents or vent stacks may be joined into one vent header before the roof; the header is sized on the total fixture units of all the stacks it serves, by the vent table (UPC 906.3 with 904.1 / Table 703.2; IPC 904.5 / Table 906.1).
- Changes of direction in vent piping use approved fittings — no bending or straining, burred ends reamed (UPC 903.3).
- Every building drain has at least one vent that extends to the outdoors (UPC 904.1 — one or more vents whose aggregate area is not less than the largest required building sewer; IPC 904.1 — not less than one dry vent to the outdoors, sized on the building drain).
